Turnips Anyone?

If you have been reading this blog then you know by now that I had a little contest and announced the winners earlier this week. Well, Turnip Of Power just happened to come in forth place. With that came a month of advertising and this blog review.

Turnip Of Power

I had been considering reviewing this site anyways for some time. I usually find some interesting stuff when I head over there so I usually check it every day. The blog hasn’t been around too long, I think his first post is dated October 17th of last year. During that time though he seems to be generating a fair amount of traffic and it looks like the blog may dip into the Alexa top 100,000 this month. That is pretty fair for a newer blog and it shows that he is serious about traffic building and it also may mean that a fair amount of others frequent the blog. Let us take a look and see why.

Site Design

The site uses a modified version of the Talian theme. This site used to use the same them but after seeing it on a hundred other sites I decided it was time for a change. Turnip seams to have made it work for his site though, with a small amount of modification it is unique. If only he would place the code for some of the items in the right sidebar inside the template instead of using the widgets he could blend it a little better. Other than that it is a well thought out modification of a good theme. As far as ads go, well he doesn’t use that many. Just a few Project Wonderful ads and an Entrecard widget in the sidebars and some Google and Shareasale ads under the posts. Now I know this isn’t part of design, but the site loads fairly fast also.

Content

Content gets posted to the blog on a fairly regular basis. Most of the posts seem to capture the readers attention because his comments section stay busy. Now every now and then he may infuse a slight bit of Entreversy into his posts or just plain controversy when it doesn’t pertain to EC (which seems to be what makes up the majority of the posts since the rise of EC). In all reality, if you want to find out the ends and outs of Entrecard, then this is a great site to learn about it. As far as other topics go, well there is still some great info in there, enough to keep you busy for a few days going through it all. I think that if you do you may find the recipe that he has used in his rise through the ranks to become a fairly high trafficked blog. One thing that is very noticeable from what I have seen, the site does not let making money get in the way of quality content like some of the big guys do.

Conclusion

I read the blog and plan to for a while and I am not the only one. His site is known through other communities of bloggers and it seems he has gained a fair amount of notoriety. Head on over and drop your card, I’m sure you will like what you have read. Here are a few posts that I found interesting;

  1. Thanks for the review. For clarification, I broke into the alexa top 26,000 for the first time yesterday. Not a 3 month average, but my highest score ever. If you actually compare my version of Talian with the stock Talian, you will see everything has been changed. Even stuff that looks familiar was tweaked, like the orange tabs up top are no longer stock. Glad you found my site interesting.

  2. I have noticed a lot of the things that you have changed in the theme and I am sorry that I didn’t cover them all here. You seem to be fairly well rehearsed in css, maybe one day I will get a handle on it and be able to do more than just change a few colors.

  3. I’m so glad I discovered your site. I also checked out Turnip of Power and it a great site as well. Thanks for the recommendation.
