Improve Your Page Rank!

There is a big debate going on about page rank. Some say it doesn’t matter, just run your website, add relevant content, and rest will sort itself out. The others say you have to work specifically on your page rank and they really believe that PR is the end all to a web sites value. Well I am going to play both sides of the fence in this debate. I am going to work on PR and mange the site while adding good content. So how do you improve your PR you ask? Well Google has these fancy algorithms that factor in links coming in and links going out, bad communities, PR of sites that link to you, listing in certain directories and probably other stuff that we know nothing about. Well I am no expert on this PR thing but I did manage to get one of my other sites to PR3 in a matter of a few months and I wasn’t even trying. I was just listing my site on top sites and some directories that I found so that I could increase traffic. Since I started all of this I have learn a few things though so now I can focus my efforts a little better. So today I headed over to SEOmoz Directory Ranking and started with the directories they have listed with a strength of 9. I did a few of those and then moved to the 8’s. I am going to try and focus on each ranking everyday until I have listed all of my sites and then I will move on. Now listing sites in directories has a twofold benefit;
1. Increased Traffic (which increases your Alexa score)
2. Increased page rank

Now you may ask why this matters at all right? Well while some of us do this simply to do it, others do it at a source of income. I mean they do provide a service so why not get paid right? So when potential advertisers look at placing some sort of ad on our site they use factors like PR or Alexa ranking and sometimes your stats. They want sites where they will get the most for their money and that is what we want to give them. So while you work on that great content make sure not to neglect getting your site listed. The keys to blogging success are many and it takes time to use them all but the final result should be a successful website.

  1. I’ve been on SEOmoz’s website countless times and I’ve never noticed the directory ranking. Thanks for the resource!

  2. Awesome tip, I have been on SEOmoz’s site a countable number of times. Zero, but I am going there right now…

  3. I keep putting off listing on directories because I simply don’t have the time. I guess I have to get down to it before the next Google Page Rank Update comes along.

  4. Although PageRank may not be as important as SERPs, it does matter especially when finding advertisers for your site. Alexa, Technorati, and PageRank are three areas where advertisers want to see “proof” that you do, indeed, have the traffic they want delivered.

  5. SERPs are one of the most important things to a web sites success. Showing up for the right keywords in google will make a site but it won’t increase the ranking. The other problem is that so many sites don’t allow people to link to stuff and it is getting worse. Forums seem to be the worst, they just don’t like giving away that free link. Heck I don’t care though, if you have a good site I will try and review it. At the very least I will add a link over on my link exchange page.

  6. Great tip! Really, I hate submitting to directories…not sure why…but it is really important!
