On Windows computers, exe or executable files are used to run various software programs. This is the reason why any problems with the exe file of a particular program may prevent it from running and generate computer errors.
There can be many causes of exe errors. For example, vsmon.exe error message may occur if you have Zonealarm firewall installed on your computer and the configuration of this firewall is preventing some essential Microsoft services from starting on the system. On the other hand, an msimn.exe error message may generate if the DBX files of your Outlook Express program are read-only or there is some problem with the Windows registry.
In these examples, we see that exe errors are generated if a program is incorrectly configured, some of the required files are not in the desired format, or there are problems in the Windows registry. In addition to these problems, exe errors may also generate if your computer is infected with a virus. There are many viruses that alter the system registry or the system configuration files in such a way that prevent the exe files from executing normally.
Now that you know some of the most common causes of exe errors, let’s have a look at some preventive measures that you can take against them.
First and foremost, whenever you install a new program on the system, ensure that it meets all the system requirements and is not known to conflict with any other program installed on your system. Then, configure this program, especially security programs such as firewalls and antimalware software, in such a way that they do not prevent essential system services from working on the computer. Lastly, ensure that the program does not load any unnecessary services at system startup because many of these services are usually not required until you use the program. If left in the system startup, they can feed on your system resources unnecessarily and also cause programs conflicts that may generate exe and other errors on the system.
Next, ensure that your system stays free of viruses and malicious programs. One of the best ways to ensure this is to use a reliable antivirus tool. There are several tools available today. You must choose the one that best meets your requirements and is compatible with your Windows operating system. To ensure that your system is safe from latest malware threats, you must periodically update the virus database of your antivirus tool and schedule regular full-system scans to detect and remove any malware data.
Windows registry issues may occur due to several reasons. For example, exe errors may occur when a virus program maliciously alters the registry settings to change the way it handles these files. In addition, you may face registry issues if the registry files are damaged and fragmented due to accumulation of a large amount of unwanted data within its files. To prevent registry problems, you must regularly scan, clean, repair and defrag your registry. This not only helps in preventing registry issues, but also enables you to optimize the registry and thereby, speed up your computer.

My biggest issues with exe and Windows come when I try to clean up my programs that run on Start. I shut down everything that isn’t my virus software or firewall and end up deleting something that Windows needs to run. You’d think the .exe would remind me to look into it before shutting it off, but I always forget. Blarg.
