Advertising Comparison; Spottt

Spottt

I don’t have much to say good about this advertising service so I want to get that out of the way first.

  1. The service is free.
  2. The site is easy to navigate and create a campaign with.

That’s it, that is all I can say that is positive about the site. I think I got 2 clicks while using the service for just a little over a month. It was a true waste of space in my sidebar and the widget took up way more space than a 125×125 ad should (more about that later).

Using The Service

So, yes as mentioned above the service is free and starting a campaign was easy. It only took about two days for everything to be approved and for the ads to start running. You can sign up for as many sites as you want but controlling where, when, how your ads are displayed isn’t part of the program. The ratio for views is kind of 4 to 1. Here is the way they explain it, every time your site is viewed you earn 3 credits, once you have 4 credits your ad will be shown on someone else site. As far as that goes, I did earn a few credits and my ads received a fair amount of exposure.

Final Thoughts

Here is some of the problems I have with the service;

  1. No customer service. I tried contacting them but never received a response.
  2. The code is huge! For some reason it took up all of the width on my sidebar and wouldn’t allow me to put another ad beside it. That alone created other problems and took up valuable space.
  3. You have no way to control your ads and increase targetization.
  4. There were times when the ads slowed my site to a crawl.

So with those being the bad points, I guess you decide on whether it is worth your time to use the service. Myself, I removed it. I really didn’t like the fact that my questions went unanswered.  When it comes down to it though it is a good way to leverage your page views and turn that into more advertising. I guess it all comes down to how much is that above the fold ad space worth to you.

  1. I think the ads slowed your website, because when the user landed on the website, it was waiting for a response from the server at the spottt service, and depending on the connection of the user… and on the browser’s settings, the browser might wait on the spottt to load longer, before trying to load some of the other website material.
