Advertising 101
Advertising is crucial to any business, but can be especially difficult when you’re low on funds. Here are 6 ideas that include low-cost methods of advertising, as well as more expensive ways.
Free
- Talk to people in your everyday life, and find a way to mention your business. Talk to strangers in line at the grocery store or bank. Talk to the cashier or bagger. In short, if you talk to anyone for longer than a few seconds, tell them about your business.
Low cost
- If you have a computer and an email account, you have a powerful advertising tool at your disposal. Your costs will only include internet access, and possibly the cost of a computer. Your signature line in every email you send should include your business name and number. Hopefully you’ve chosen an email address that also includes your company’s name.
- Get some business cards made. There are online services that are very low cost, you can print your own, or get them made a low cost printer. Now you can give your card (or three) to everyone you meet in everyday life. Business cards can also be left at various stores and coffee shops for passers-by to pick up at their leisure.
Free to medium cost
- Start a blog aimed at marketing your business, and spend some time promoting it in the blogosphere. Your blog can be a chronicle of your daily business life, articles about your company’s subject matter, or articles discussing how your business will benefit its customers. Be creative.
Low to high cost
- Create a website for your company using your own domain name. If you’re not a writer, consider hiring one. Your website is the first impression many potential customers will have of your company and your brand.
- Buy advertising space in local newspapers, trade journals, websites, blogs, and phone books. Figure out what would work best for your company’s product or service, and try several options. If something doesn’t work out, feel free to try another advertising space.
Advertising is more of an art than science. You have to be ready to try new things and use your creativity. The most important part of advertising and marketing is to start somewhere. You can’t advertise just by thinking about it.

Thanks for reading Chris. I hope I can continue to write stuff that is worth reading.
I believe those that learn to creatively and continually advertise themselves and their business are the ones who see the most success. And as you say it is a fine line! Those around you do not want to hear about your business 24/7, it gets annoying. But learning to speak about at appropriate times can make a huge difference in your success.
Personally the best advice on your tips is the business card! There is a reason why it has been so successful so long. Drop them every chance you get! Even if it is just giving a new friend your phone number.
Great tips. My favorite is using the signature in your emails.
Thanks for the advertising tips.
What do you think about the effectiveness of using Squidoo and Hubpages to get some free advertising?
